The crowd at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
The 50th Anniversary of the Monterey Jazz Festival proved to be a rousing success. 45,000 fans attended the historic event and all three days were sold out, a festival first.
The WBGO production team that recorded and broadcast the concerts by Gerald Wilson, Otis Taylor, Dave Brubeck and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra put together a ten-minute audio montage of some of the festival's highlights. Emcee and festival manager Tim Jackson introduces the artists, which include Chris Potter, Otis Taylor, the Terence Blanchard Quartet, Ornette Coleman and Diana Krall. Comedian and longtime Monterey supporter Mort Sahl introduces "The Colossus," Sonny Rollins. The montage also captures actor Clint Eastwood receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the Berklee College of Music for his lifelong dedication to jazz and jazz education.
