Researchers Unlock Benefits of Nitrite

Researchers report that nitrite therapy could be used to increase blood flow to aid patients suffering from heart disease and sickle cell disease. Until now, scientists had believed nitrite to be inactive in the body. NPR's Robert Siegel talks with Dr. Mark Gladwin of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.
