GAO: FCC Tips Lobbyists on Phone, Cable Issues
The Government Accountability Office releases a report accusing the Federal Communications Commission of leaking tips to business interests before they're made public. It says the FCC sometimes informs phone and cable lobbyists about items coming up for a vote in Congress. That advance word is critical because companies and consumer groups aren't allowed to lobby once an agenda for a vote is made public. The Center for Responsive Politics says the FCC is closely intertwined with industry lobbyists — almost as close as the White House and members of the House of Representatives. In fact, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin used to be one.
