Zalmay Khalilzad is the new U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. A native of the Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, Khalilzad has served as President Bush's special envoy to Afghanistan, and has been an architect of the administration's Afghanistan policy. NPR's Steve Inskeep speaks with Khalilzad.
