All Things Considered

In this week's installment of the NPR 100, we feature One O'clock Jump, by the Count Basie Orchestra. It was recorded in 1937, and became Basie's signature theme. He recorded it several times and played it at the end of performances for more than 50 years. Basie was born on this day in 1904, and as a young man became part of the jazz and blues scene in Kansas City. He came to New York City in 1936, and used elements of blues and jazz in the newer sounds of swing and big band. One O'clock Jump is a good example of this, with a driving rhythm section, along with several different riffs (12-bar musical themes) on instruments like the trumpet, sax, and trombones.
