'Potter' Fans Learn that Wizard Dumbledore Is Gay

Listen to this 'Talk of the Nation' topic

Louis Peitzman, a senior at the University of California, Berkeley, talks about the recent announcement from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling that Dumbledore, the beloved wizard from the series, is gay. Peitzman's op-ed "Outed!" appeared in The Daily Californian on Monday.

Peitzman says that as a gay Harry Potter fan, he was glad to learn that Rowling wrote Dumbledore as a gay character. However, he writes, "I just wish it felt more like a real coming out, courageous and satisfying, and less like a PR stunt."
