The Pale of Settlement is a collection of linked short stories set in the Middle East — but it takes its title from the western borderlands of the Russian empire, where Jews were required to live in past centuries.

The author, Margot Singer, is the latest winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction from the University of Georgia Press.
