November 2, 2007 - When Nickel Creek began as a bluegrass trio in 1989, its pre-teen members stunned audiences with their remarkable musical gifts. Since then, their sound has evolved into progressive acoustic music, but they're calling it quits. Hear Nickel Creek recorded live in concert in one of the band's final performances together, with an opening performance by Bruce Molsky.

Nickel Creek still features its original three members: Sean Watkins on guitar, his sister Sara Watkins on fiddle and mandolin player Chris Thile.

The trio met and began playing together in San Diego. Thile and Sara Watkins were just eight years old, while Sean Watkins was 12.

Though the group's sound remains rooted in bluegrass, it's become more explosive and unpredictable, incorporating elements of rock and pop while remaining entirely acoustic.

In the late summer of 2006, the trio announced that it would no longer record together, and that its current tour would be its last for an indefinite period. All say they plan to pursue solo projects.

The "Farewell (For Now)" tour ends Nov. 29 with a final performance in Nashville. So far, the tour has featured surprise appearances by the likes of Fiona Apple, Jon Brion and Ben Harper.

Bruce Molsky is a fiddler, banjo player and guitarist with a love for old-time Appalachian music. His most recent album is the 2006 release, Soon Be Time.
