Robert Harris's novel Pompeii is an historical thriller set on the eve of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, A.D. The story involves a widowed engineer who comes to investigate problems brewing in the tunnels and aqueducts of ancient Rome. Alan Cheuse has a review.
