The pastor whose church in Birmingham, Ala., was the site of a 1963 bombing that killed four young girls has died at 82.

The Rev. John H. Cross Jr. dug through the rubble of his church in the minutes after the bombing to search for survivors.

He presided over the funeral services for three of the four girls, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the eulogy.
