Calif. Tree Farmer Concerned about Immigration
California tree grower Robert Wooley sells peach, cherry and almond trees to commercial growers. Lately, he says, demand has been slackening, especially for fruit trees. The commercial growers he sells to rely on labor by Mexican and Central American immigrants. He says the crackdown on immigration raises concerns that buyers will face a shortage of hands to harvest the fruit, and as a result consumers will inevitably pay more.
