Gypsies Battle over Fortunetelling Turf

text sizeAAA
December 6, 2007

Two Gypsy clans are involved in a court battle over the fortunetelling trade in Newport Beach, Calif.

The Stevens and Merino clans have run a number of fortunetelling businesses in Southern California for decades. The trouble started two years ago when the Merino clan opened fortunetelling parlors in two trendy sections of Newport Beach near where the Stevens clan did business. The Merino clan says the Stevens tried to bribe them to leave, then began threatenening and harassing them when they refused.

AP reporter Gillian Flaccus, who spent five months working on an article about the dispute, talks to Alex Chadwick about the story.
