A blues- and jazz-influenced jam-rock supergroup, The Word features some of the genre's biggest names, including pedal-steel guitarist Robert Randolph, keyboardist John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin & Wood) and the members of North Mississippi Allstars: bassist Chris Chew, guitarist Luther Dickinson and drummer Cody Dickinson. Hear The Word perform a concert from WXPN and the Electric Factory in Philadelphia.
The Word was founded in 2001, when the Dickinsons and Medeski found Randolph — then 22, with only one commercially available song under his belt. In spite of his popularity within the gospel world, Randolph had not yet crossed over to secular music. In just three days of jamming in Medeski, Martin & Wood's studio, The Word's self-titled debut was finished. The result showcases Randolph's mesmerizing pedal-steel sermons to powerful effect.
