Commentary: War Reflected in Spain's Culture

Commentator Andrei Codrescu salutes Spain and its history of tragedy as recorded by its artists. He says Spain has enjoyed a few years of unaccustomed lassitude and leisure after the death of Franco. According to Codrescu, the period is best described in the films of Pedro Almodovar, in which tragedy is only the background for farcical sexual dilemmas.
