Both Iowa and New Hampshire — states with an early stake in the election — have been criticized as not representing America, given their size and lack of racial diversity.

Farai Chideya weighs the issue and the larger impact of the African-American vote with Angela McGowan and Jamal Simmons.

McGowan is a Republican strategist and founder of the consulting firm Political Strategies and Insights. Democrat Jamal Simmons was press secretary for the presidential campaigns of Sen. Bob Graham and Gen. Wesley Clark.
