Today, News & Notes launches a new, monthlong series called "Great Expectations." You'll hear from people who expected — and achieved — greatness against adversity.

Helping us frame the conversation are Judge Lynn Toler and Newsweek contributing editor Ellis Cose.

Toler, of television's Divorce Court, is a former real-life judge, who has helped others get through tough times. Cose, who has his own tale of triumph, is working on a new show called Against the Odds for Public Radio International.
