NPR's Howard Berkes interviews Michael Perry, author of the autobiographical book Population: 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time. Perry tells of returning to his tiny hometown of New Auburn, Wisc., and getting to know the people by joining the volunteer fire department and rescue squad.
