Italian Prime Minister Forced to Resign

Prime Minister Romano Prodi has lost a confidence vote in the Italian Senate and has been forced to offer his government's resignation.

Italy's president could try to encourage the creation of an interim government, whose main task will be to reform the election law. But the opposition, led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, is pressing for an immediate election.
