Afghan Journalism Student Faces Death Sentence
An Afghan journalism student has been sentenced to death for blaspheming Islam. But the case seems to be less about Islam than about the Afghanistan government's increasing intimidation of its media.
The real target is widely believed to be the condemned man's older brother, Yaqub Ibrahimi, who works for the British-run Institute for War and Peace Reporting.
Ibrahimi wrote a story about corruption and abuses by politicians and warlords in the Mazar area. His notes and hard drive were confiscated in a police raid after his story appeared.
The case of his brother, Parwez Kaambakhsh, meanwhile, moves to the first of two appeals courts, one of which is likely to commute the sentence.
