RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

NPR'S business news starts with slowing in the telecom equipment industry.

In response to that slowdown, Motorola and Nortel Networks are said to be in talks to combine their wireless infrastructure units. The Wall Street Journal reports the talks have been going on for nearly a month.

If they agree on the deal, Motorola and Nortel will combine businesses that would have an estimated $10 billion in sales.
