February 14, 2008

A man armed with a shotgun opened fire in a lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Police say the gunman is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot. At least four others are dead and a dozen wounded.

Northern Illinois is closed Friday, and counselors are being made available to students.

Jim Killam, faculty adviser for campus newspaper Northern Star, talks with Melissa Block and Michele Norris.

Killam says the lecture hall where the shooting took place has about 150 seats. The gunman entered from behind a screen in the front of the hall, where the professor would stand, and opened fire on the class.

When he got to the scene, Killam says, a couple of students were down on the pavement being attended to by paramedics.

The shooting happened in the auditorium, but as students scattered, they began showing up bloody in other buildings, making it appear as if shootings had happened all over campus.

Every student seemed to be on a cell phone, and it became hard to make calls because the lines were jammed.

The incident was over fairly quickly, Killam says.
