NPR's Karen Grigsby Bates talks with pioneering black filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles about his career. In the new biopic film Baadasssss!, the filmmaker's son Mario Van Peebles plays his father as a young independent director fighting the Hollywood establishment in the early 1970s to make a political film about race relations in America.
