More About 'Raisin'
In 1959, Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun debuted as the first Broadway play written by an African-American woman. On Feb. 25, the film makes its world television premiere on ABC.
A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of the Youngers, a black family on the south side of Chicago. The Youngers struggle to hold onto their dreams amid bitter disappointment and self doubt.
Lena Younger is the God-fearing matriarch of the Younger family. The character is brought to life on television by actress Phylicia Rashad, who won a Tony Award for the revived role on Broadway. Also starring in the made-for-television production are Sean "Diddy" Combs — reprising an early Sidney Poitier role as Walter Lee Younger — Sanaa Lathan, Audra McDonald and John Stamos.
Rashad talks about her role in the production and what she hopes younger generations can learn from the film.
