NPR's Deborah Amos in Baghdad reports that while the Shiite Muslim heartland of southern Iraq was spared from new attacks, U.S. troops in southern towns and cities like Najaf are racing against the clock to put an Iraqi face on security operations in the country ahead of the June 30th transition.
