The Newest NPR T-Shirt Is Here, Features Winning Design In NPR + Threadless Challenge


After 80,000 votes on more than 150 design submissions, the newest NPR t-shirt is here. Milwaukee artist Jessica Roush has been selected as the winner of the "My Sound World" t-shirt design challenge from NPR and Threadless, a global design community of more than 2.5 million artists. T-shirts featuring the winning NPR: Plugged In design are available now for purchase in the NPR Shop and at, with proceeds benefiting NPR and Roush's NPR Member stations, WUNC Raleigh and WUWM Milwaukee.

In August NPR and Threadless came together to host the four-week design challenge that called on artists to create the ultimate NPR t-shirt with a design inspired by NPR and public radio - the sounds and stories that inform, surprise, engage and delight. Roush's NPR: Plugged In concept received more than 500 votes on, where NPR and Threadless tasked the public with scoring entries.

"This one was a challenge," said Roush. "Not only is it about SOUND, which isn't easily expressed visually, but also about NPR, which has a scope so broad that it would be impossible to illustrate all of the topics that it covers. I decided to illustrate instead its effect on me, in that I get lost in thought and imagination and wonder when I listen. I'm absorbed by the current events stories, and feel closer to the world around me. I tried to include country, suburban, and cityscapes (along with a little capitol building!), and the NPR colors (red, black and blue)."

Roush, a textile artist in the Home department of Kohl's Corporate Office and owner of the online shop "Querida" ("darling" in Spanish), graduated from North Carolina State in 2010 with degrees in Textile Technology and Art & Design. In addition to receiving a prize pack that includes a private tour of NPR's new headquarters in Washington, D.C., t-shirts featuring Roush's design are available for purchase online at the NPR Shop (unisex & women's fit) and, and starting October 21, will also be available in the Commons at NPR headquarters.
