Uninterested in politics for most of his adult life, his son's death in 1996 propelled North Carolina Sen. John Edwards into public service. As Sen. John Kerry's running mate, Edwards brings youth, optimism and a solidly middle-class background to the Democratic ticket. But Kerry and Edwards have strong differences on several issues.
