Gloria Emerson began her career reporting fashion at The New York Times. She persuaded her editor to send her to Northern Ireland, and later covered wars in Vietnam, the Middle East and El Salvador. Emerson said it was important for women to cover war zones because at heart, men were boys easily dazzled by guns and uniforms. NPR's Scott Simon has a remembrance.
