Hurricane Primer

Hurricane: A severe tropical cyclone in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160E.

Tropical cyclones with winds of less than 39 mph are called tropical depressions.

When winds reach at least 39 mph, they are called tropical storms.

Once wind speeds reach 74 mph, the storm is named and becomes a hurricane.
