Gulf Coast Residents Prepare to Outlast Storm
With Hurricane Ivan set to come ashore Wednesday night, people along the Gulf Coast are making preparations. NPR's Michele Norris and NPR's Melissa Block talk with a collection of people from Mississippi and Florida. Harry White is from the public affairs office at Pensacola Naval Air Station, where all essential personnel have evacuated. Ann Roehrig is a Pensacola resident who plans to ride out the storm at home with her husband. Alan Vanzandt is the supplies coordinator for Red Cross shelters in three Mississippi counties. James Taranowski owns Easy D's gas and convenience store in Gulf Shores, Ala., where he has sold a lot of cigarettes and beer. Chief Peter Paudling is with the police department in Gulf Breeze, Fla., where most residents have evacuated.
