NPR's John Ydstie reports employers added 96,000 jobs to their payrolls in September — a number well below what economists had forecast for the last employment report before the election in November. Payrolls increased for the 13th month in a row, but the pace of job creation has been unusually slow since the spring. The unemployment rate was unchanged in September, at 5.4 percent.
