Beloved American Metropolitan Opera baritone Robert Merrill died at his home Saturday, October 23. He was 87. NPR's Fred Child has an appreciation.
Merrill, who sang at the Met from 1945 through 1976, died while watching the opening game of the World Series. Unfortunately, his beloved Yankees were not playing; a recording of Merrill's voice singing the national anthem could be heard for years at the start of Yankees home games.
