New PLO Chief Abbas Escapes Injury in Attack

The newly appointed leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Mahmoud Abbas, escaped injury Sunday when gunfire broke out at a mourning tent for Yasser Arafat in Gaza. Two people died as anti-Abbas protesters exchanged fire with Abbas bodyguards. The 69-year-old Abbas is also the establishment candidate to replace Arafat as Palestinian Authority president.
