U.S. Politics and 'Litmus Test' Hot Topics

NPR's Mike Pesca examines the use of the phrase "litmus test" when applied to judicial appointments and controversial issues such as abortion and the death penalty. In a chemistry lab, a litmus test measures degrees of acidity on a graduated scale — but in political terms, it's a black-or-white stand on a topic.
