Haiti Update

Since Attorney General John Ashcroft declared in a legal opinion in 2003 that illegal immigrants can be jailed indefinitely without bond when national security risks exist, many Haitians have been detained. Among them, 20-year-old David Joseph, whose case attracted national attention when he arrived in Miami by boat two years ago and leaped into Biscayne Bay. He was among more than 200 Haitians who were deported to Haiti last week. NPR's Tavis Smiley discusses Homeland Security policy toward Haitians with Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies and Marleine Bastien, executive director of Haitian Women of Miami, Inc., which fights for Haitian immigration rights.
