William Safire Retires 'Times' Op-Ed Column

William Safire has been a staple of The New York Times op-ed page since 1973. His last regular column for the Times will run on Monday, January 24. The former Nixon speechwriter has been one of the more conservative voices for the paper, but his civil libertarian streak has sometimes put him at odds with Republican talking points.
