Traditional Chinese Music and Phillip Glass

No conversation about Chinese traditional music would be complete without the pipa, an ancient guitar-like instrument. One of the best known current practitioners of the pipa is Wu Man. Fred talks with Wu Man, and we hear her play ancient music on the pipa, on stage at Summerfest La Jolla 2003, in La Jolla, California. Then we hear the pipa in a modern context, in music by Phillip Glass. Wu Man joins violinist Cho-Liang Lin, cellist Felix Fan, flutist Marisela Sager and percussionist Steven Schick to play a short excerpt from Glass's opera The Sound of a Voice.
