On her first trip abroad as secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice tried to patch up relations between the United States and Europe. France and Germany were two of the nations that opposed the war in Iraq and received visits from the secretary. Andre Kaspi, professor of American history at the Sorbonne in Paris and Josef Joffe, editor of Die Zeit, discuss European reaction to the trip.
