A Doctor's Unlikely Path: Ranches and Brew Pubs

Dr. Tom Taylor abhors tedium — in fact, he delights in drastic change. A first-year resident at Portland's Oregon Health and Science University, Taylor spent years trying out careers as diverse as being a forest ranger, a lab tech, a carpenter and a ranch hand.

While pursuing his own brew pub in San Francisco, Taylor took organic chemistry in pursuit of the perfect pint. The course rekindled his lifelong interest in science and medicine, a career he'd considered but abandoned in his early 20's.

At 43, Taylor is older than his peers. But the affable, bearded doctor suspects that his years in the working world give him a depth as a doctor he couldn't have drawn from before.

Dr. Taylor will be 45 when he finishes his residency in internal medicine and launches his new career. Given the grueling life of a med student, no doubt his family — wife Chris, sons Jamie and Benjamin — will be delighted to have him back.
