When Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was head of the Senate Appropriations committee a small item found its way into last year's multi-billion dollar spending bill. It was a proposed bus stop in front of the Anchorage Museum of History and Art — with electronic signs and a heated sidewalk... for $1.5 million. Sen. Stevens' office says only that to build any infrastructure in far away, icy Alaska is "costly."
