Chopin rode a wave of piano popularity in the mid-1800s, from the concert hall into private parlors. He borrowed a tune from the opera Ludovic by Herold and wrote some variations on it. Turkish pianist Gulsin Onay plays Chopin's Op. 12 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
