Frank Wilkinson, Activist Who Fought 'Red Scare'

Frank Wilkinson, who became a civil rights activist after he was targeted in the 1950s "Red Scare" era over plans for a public housing project, died Monday at his Los Angeles home. Kit Gage, director of the First Amendment Foundation, talks about Wilkinson's life and work.

Wilkinson was suspended from his job after a 1952 eminent domain hearing, during which he asserted his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked to which groups he belonged. The question came at a time when Sen. Joseph McCarthy was spearheading a nationwide anti-communist campaign.
