Bedrich Smetana

Audio for this story from Performance Today is not available.

Czech composer Bedrich Smetana wrote his opera The Bartered Bride during a happy and productive period of his life. It's probably good that he was happy while he was writing it; the opera failed to impress patrons on its premiere in May, 1866. Czech conductor Zdenek Macal leads the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in two features from the very Czech composition, the Furiant and the Skocna.
