Robert Schumann

Audio for this story from Performance Today is not available.

The fictitious Band of David was a community of rebellious artists who fought the wishy-washy tastes of musical Philistines. Two of the band's supporting members were Robert Schumann and his wife Clara. She was the inspiration and he was the composer of a set of dances he called "Davidsbuendlertaenze." Richard Goode plays seven of the dances at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, Mich.
