Recipes From Goiânia, Brazil

One day we'll have a recipe from Janete. She's working as a driver for Kragen Auto and hasn't had the time to write it up for us. Meanwhile, Susan Maria Howard, who translated for Janete in the story, is from Goiânia herself; she generously shared three of her recipes with us.

Vitamina de Banana

Vitamina is a smoothie, except that they are always freshly made — even the orange juice is freshly squeezed. I make a vitamina every day.

  • 1 banana
  • 1 glass of milk
  • Blend very well and drink instantly, with ice if it's warm
  • Some people add sugar, but not me

Vitamina de Banana com Maça

  • 1 banana
  • 1 apple
  • 1 glass of orange juice (I don't squeeze it myself anymore...)
  • Blend and drink. Ice and sugar are optional.

Sopa de Feijão (Pinto Soup)

Sopa de feijão is really good on a cold day, after a night out or as a snack or appetizer.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of pinto beans
  • 1/2 cup of small pasta, such as vermicelli
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 onion
  • Salt and pepper

Recipe:

  • Cook the beans with 5 cups of water, the bay leaf, garlic, onion, salt and pepper to taste, for 1 hour.
  • Cook the pasta separately.
  • Blend the cooked beans with the water until smooth. Add the cooked pasta and correct the seasoning.
  • Serve hot, with bacon bits or chopped parsley.
