The Turtle Island String Quartet.
What Is the Future of Classical Music?
What is the future of classical music? Performance Today is approaching the question from several different angles these days. We spend this segment hearing answers from two string quartets. The Shanghai Quartet plays arrangements of two Chinese folk tunes: a Shepherd's Song, and Harvest Celebration. (Arrangements by Yi-Wen Jiang.) And the Turtle Island Quartet plays John Coltrane's Naima, with a little improvisation on violin and cello. Both concerts were earlier this season in Portland, Ore. Plus, differing points of view from listeners on where classical music can and should go.
