Militant Bombing Plot Foiled, Egyptians Say

text sizeAAA
April 19, 2006

Egyptian authorities say they have broken up an Islamic militant plot to bomb gas pipelines and attack tourist sites. The news comes as Egypt is cracking down on opposition politicians. Recently, President Hosni Mubarak has suggested that long-standing emergency laws giving him extraordinary police powers may not be lifted this year, as he promised in his re-election campaign.

Reform advocates say that Egypt's leaders have moved to solidify their control, rather than heeding U.S. advice to open the country's political process. Two outspoken judges who reported fraud during last year's elections have been threatened with disciplinary action.
