Strange Bedfellows

Rupert Murdoch, right, will hold a fundraiser for Sen. Hillary Clinton this summer. The new alliance has stirred anger among some Democrats.

One of the oft-expressed thoughts you hear these days in Washington (true or not) is that while the Republicans stand for the wrong things, Democats will stand for anything -- as long as it will help them in the elections. Advocates from both sides will heatedly dispute that, but there is no doubt that the sentiment is out there.

I thought of that while I read about the latest marriage of convenience: the news that Fox News president Rupert Murdoch will host a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. Yes, the conservative media mogul and the vast right-wing conspiracy basher/frontrunner for the 2008 Democatic presidential nomination. Those wacky lovebirds.

Just as the Harriet Miers and Dubai ports fiascos sent right-wingers through the roof, this latest pairing is making some lefties apoplectic. They were already shaking their heads when Hillary showed up last month at Fox News' 10th anniversary party in D.C. And now this.

David Sirota, who writes one of the most hard-hitting blogs on the left, was outraged:

"Here you have a top member of the American government shaking down cash from a guy whose record is chock full of union-busting, tax-evading, local media crushing, war mongering and all sorts of other disgusting behavior."

For more Sirota, go here.

I notice that when President Bush returns to the White House from Florida today, he will meet this afternoon with victims of identity theft. Maybe he'll meet with Hillary Clinton.

Bedfellows: Bumper

I've got your bumper sticker ready...

Murdoch Hillary: Shift

Don't forget Murdoch switched his loyalty (and more importantly, that of his various media outlets, both print and broadcast) in Britain from the Conservative to Labor when it became clear that Labour was about to take power in 1997. Maybe he sees a turning of the tide and is planning to get on board with the dems before 2008... and take Fox News and the NY Post with him...
