Israel's new Defense Minister orders the reopening of the main commercial crossing into the Gaza Strip, after months of closure that led to shortages of essential goods. Amir Peretz of the Labor Party is making several policy changes with regard to the Palestinians, including allowing more workers into Israel. Peretz has also said he hopes to ease travel restrictions and closures. The first Israeli Defense Minister in many years to not have a military background, Peretz's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is controversial in Israel.
