Berlin's Street Musicians Unite to Share the Wealth
There are so many street musicans in Berlin that they have formed their own community. Mostly Turks, Morroccans and Eastern Europeans, the musicians have organized themselves with the help of the city council.
In classic German style, there's actually a municipal office dedicated to making sure street musicians are licensed and that everyone gets equal access to the best spots. Every morning at 6am the musicians meet at the city office and get their 'beat assignments' for the day.
Some corners and some train lines are more lucrative so the office attempts to divvy these up to spread the wealth. We have an audio postcard from NPR's Rachel Martin.
