At Tribune Co., an Insider Pushes for Profits
One of the nation's most prominent media companies is under assault from members of its board of directors. The Tribune Company owns the Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Newsday, eight other major daily papers and 26 television stations -- in addition to the Chicago Cubs.
Six years ago, the prominent Chandler family of Los Angeles sold the Times and other papers to the Tribune and became the company's second-largest shareholder. Now, they are calling for the Tribune Company's breakup. They say the company's leadership has failed to increase profits and has damaged the quality of its newspapers.
